Cinderella’s Glass Slipper was designed by her godmother to fit only her foot and no other. This glass motor showroom was designed by our studio to fit with an existing project, Harrow House (featured elsewhere on this website). The property already had garaging for eight vehicles and in addition there is a huge motor court. Our client asked for a new structure to house another six vehicles, and which could double as a function room when the vehicles are removed. Our studio went to work and created three walls of pure glass and a frontage of eighteen metres of pure glass sliding doors which work with a remote control. Executing the door design was a challenge. As far as we know, the idea is a novel one and we invented a mechanism that would drive the three tons of glass doors on which our client’s family crest is embedded. We also overcame an engineering challenge as we had to hang the heavy doors on a hidden steel beam. The roof was designed to mimic that of Harrow House to make the structure harmonious with what was already there.
The interior is simple yet complicated. The floors consist of oversized polished porcelain tiles with six one of a kind , handcrafted, marble motifs, one for each vehicle, cut into the tiles with stainless steel bollards on the north facing glass walls to prevent vehicles from crashing into the glass.
The ceiling and lighting design consist of stretched ceilings backlit to highlight our client’s family crest. Downlighters and LED lights illuminate the coves in the ceiling and wash the glass walls. Crystal chandeliers finish the showroom off. All these elements combine seamlessly together. It is one of a kind, unique in itself, fits perfectly and that is why we have called it Cinderella’s Glass Slipper.
